One coach, calibrated numbers and a program that moves around your work and family

TriVelo Coaching athlete racing on the bike

TriVelo Coaching is one-on-one online triathlon coaching for age-group athletes in any country. You get one coach, your numbers calibrated in your first week and recalibrated every four to six weeks, and a program that moves around your work and family. It costs $99 USD a week, plus GST in Australia.

Head coach Gerard Donnelly was the 1988 Australian Ironman Champion and was in Australia's triathlon team at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. We're based in Australia and all our coaching is done online.

We will never use AI to write your program or coach you. Read our stance on AI.

Who it's for

  • You work full time, run a business, work shifts or travel for work, and you have a family to fit in as well.
  • You've been guessing at your training, or your last coach gave you little feedback.
  • You're new to the sport or you're already chasing age-group places. We coach absolute beginners and experienced racers.
  • You'll follow the plan and tell your coach what's happening.

It won't suit you if you want to question or change the plan most weeks. That's why you apply first and speak with Gerard.

Results from our athletes

All of these come from case studies on our Get Fast Podcast.

Tommy: 6:05 to 4:54 at the same 70.3, one year apart.

Swim 41 to 33 minutes, bike 3:11 to 2:37, run 2:00 to 1:35. He went from 90th to 39th. The 6:05 was a very bad day for him, and we said on the episode that most athletes won't see a jump that big.

Jeff: FTP 192 W to 246 W in 16 weeks.

He has three kids and was flying between the UK, the US and Australia for work. His swim went from 1:50 to 1:41 per 100 m.

Harrison: FTP 220 W to 276 W on about 7 to 11 hours a week.

He's 24 and works in the family business in country Victoria. His first number was 171 W, but that was a poor effort, so we count from his next one. His swim went from 2:06 to 1:49 per 100 m.

Ben: estimated FTP 204 W to 270 W in six months.

He fits his training around shift work and sends his roster in advance so his coach can plan around it.

Marcus: finished the Noosa Olympic distance after nearly two and a half years.

He runs his own electrical business and has kids. His swim went from 2:30 to 1:59 per 100 m.

How it works

1. Apply and talk to Gerard.

You fill in a short form, then have a free call of about 30 to 45 minutes. We're checking that it's a good fit. You don't have to be fast. If we can help, Gerard matches you with a coach.

2. Set up.

You complete an athlete profile with your goals and load your training history. Your program is built in TrainingPeaks and links to your Garmin or Wahoo and to Zwift.

3. Calibrate in week one.

We calibrate your numbers on the bike, in the water and on the run, so your sessions come from your own numbers. If you can't yet swim or run far enough, we build that first.

4. Train with targets.

Your zones and sessions come from your own calibrated numbers. When you finish, your data uploads and you add a note on how it felt.

5. Your coach reviews your data.

This is the centre of how we coach. The data shows your coach what happened, your notes explain why, and together they decide what comes next. Your coach sets your next week after seeing how this one went.

6. Adjust the week.

If work, family, sickness or fatigue gets in the way, your coach moves the sessions. We don't put a limit on how much our coaches contact our athletes. Our goal is to get you the best results possible, and we communicate as much as that takes.

7. Recalibrate every four to six weeks.

We change your pacing and your zones as you get fitter.

8. Get ready to race.

Your sessions become race-ready in the last 8 to 12 weeks, with a race plan meeting in race week and a review afterwards.

How we train triathletes

Frequency first, then volume, then intensity.

New athletes build the habit of regular sessions before anything gets harder.

Run training that keeps you on the start line.

Gerard's view is that injury is the biggest limiter for age groupers. Most of our triathletes get less hard running than they expect. Hills do much of the work on the run, and the bike and pool carry more of the intensity.

Speed is the goal.

Power tells you how hard to ride, but what counts is how fast you get from A to B. We look at how long you spend in your target range, then work on pacing and position as well as fitness.

Common questions

How much does a triathlon coach cost?

Ours costs $99 USD a week, which is about $429 USD a month, plus GST in Australia.

I'm a beginner. Am I good enough?

Yes. VJ couldn't swim more than 50 m when he started and went on to finish a 70.3. We don't select on ability.

Do I need a power meter?

Yes, on the bike you ride. If you don't have one yet, getting one is your first job, and Gerard can help you work out what you need.

Do I have to use TrainingPeaks?

Yes. Your program is delivered there, and it's where your coach sees your sessions. The free version is enough, so you don't need Premium.

What if I miss a session or work blows up?

Tell your coach, and they'll move the week. If you're short of time, you can cut the warm-up and cool-down and still do the main part of the session.

Do you coach athletes outside Australia?

Yes. We coach athletes all around the world and have coaches in several countries. Where we can, we match you with a coach in a similar time zone.

Am I locked into a contract?

No. We don't lock you into a fixed six or 12-month contract, and you pay weekly in advance. You can pause for genuine reasons such as injury or significant illness.

Is there a guarantee?

If your calibrated numbers don't improve in your first 8 weeks, the coaching is on us.

Why not use a cheap plan or an AI plan?

A cheap plan stays the same whatever happens. An AI plan can change your next session from your data. Neither gives you a person who knows you, talks it through with you and helps you get the session right. That's what you're paying a coach for.
